@soapdog haha I love that. It is a bit of a thrill to get such positive feedback as it's pretty exhausting. I personally handled things better this year after taking until December to fully recover in 2017. A situation to never be repeated. 😁
Wranglers are lucky to see any of the event. In 2 years I've sat in on ONE session. 🔥 😳
You doing a proposal for FOSDEM? Of course there's the Mozilla Devroom but for sure @loic would be keen on your stuff in the Decentralised Internet and Privacy room!
@ghost @aral @indie patents are hostile to software in general, even Bill Gates acknowledged this many years ago. Does Google use their patents against Free Software? I'm not aware of it, they are also a OIN member. Which is no surprise to me, giving the stuff I tried to explain in my previous two toots. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to defend Google or swpats. But as always, it is complex... to complex for 500 chars. 😉
@loic @ghost @aral @indie
I think that's the irony here. While their business model is extremely hostile to our privacy it is quite friendly to Free Software. While companies with real (software) products might be arguable more privacy friendly but have huge incentives to be more hostile to Free Software.
@loic @ghost @aral @indie and last but not least you have to keep in mind that they are a large consumer of Free Software. They probably use and contribute to Free Software for completely different reasons then most of us do, but you can't deny that they have a interest in good and successful Free Software. It also doesn't interfere with their business model, exactly because they are not a product company.
@aral @loic @indie I'd rather say the strange part is Google willing to sponsor the conference, which promotes all the things that go against its core business model at some degree. I think it's fine as long as they are willing to pay the contribution without interfering anything. They have much more to gain in industrial consortiums where they can actually lobby.
The 'green energy' metaphor illustrates well the situation with open-source and free software. While the dominant narrative is that transition towards 'green tech' is good, the fact is that Occident externalized pollution to the mining operations and claim being green.
Now that the GAFAM embraced open-source, they can claim being green, while they're far from it. They're doing green washing.
But many among developers simply like to think it's genuine.
FOSDEM needs to change on more than one accounts. Funding sources is only one of the issues. More important issues IMO are gender and politics.
At the DI&P devroom we're trying to address both -- from within FOSDEM.
Two things I'm personally sure of:
- if FOSDEM does not address these issues, I'll find other places to do it
- Google has been a sponsor of FOSDEM for years. I do not attend the beer event, but still want to meet with the people there.
@loic FOSDEM 2018 had one of the world’s largest surveillance capitalists as its primary sponsor. Who are the sponsors this year?
If Google is sponsoring again, there is no way either I or @indie would take part.
It’s time events that purport to be about freedom stop legitimising and whitewashing surveillance capitalists. And it’s time those of us with legitimacy in this area stop being complicit in that practice.
